Teaching
The Discipline of Surgery is involved in teaching throughout the Sydney Medical Program. A major component occurs during the clinical attachments in Years 3 and 4, but surgeons also contribute significantly to teaching in Years 1 and 2 through tutorials in communication and physical examination skills. There is also the opportunity to contribute to PBL tutorials in Years 1 and 2, although the set time-frame for these tutorials can be difficult for busy clinicians who generally have to deal with a large patient case load including emergencies.
Teaching extends into the postgraduate Master of Surgery (coursework) program which is now increasingly undertaken by established and prospective surgical trainees. All Discipline of Surgery members are involved in the specialty Surgical Education and Training (SET) programs of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) which occurs in our teaching hospitals, and those surgical trainees in turn contribute significantly to the teaching of our USydMP students.
