A multidisciplinary research unit of Sydney South West Area Health Service and the University of Sydney


The Surgical Outcomes Research Centre (SOuRCe) is a dynamic, multidisciplinary, academic research unit dedicated to the advancement of evidence-based surgical practice and patient choice through the conduct of outcomes orientated surgical research. We are a conjoint unit of Sydney South West Area Health Service (SSWAHS) and the University of Sydney. Our research program includes the evaluation of surgical effectiveness and studies which focus on, the implementation of evidence-based practice, patient health outcomes, quality of life, evidence-based decision-making, economic evaluation and health service utilisation. Our collaborators include surgeons, clinicians and academics within and beyond SSWAHS and the University of Sydney who are locally, nationally and internationally based. SOuRCe is also involved in the education and training of surgeons in postgraduate programs, including the Masters of Surgery, at the University of Sydney.

Objectives

The Surgical Outcomes Research Unit promotes evidence based clinical practice and patient choice by:

  • promoting and performing clinical trials of surgical operations and diagnostic tests related to surgery
  • conducting methodological research into randomised and non-randomised study designs to evaluate surgical procedures
  • providing education and training for surgeons in clinical trial and evaluation methodology
  • conducting economic evaluation of surgical procedures providing assistance and expert advice to surgical groups on trial design, economic evaluation and health outcome (quality of life) analysis
  • developing methodology for measuring patient choice
  • undertaking evaluation of cancer screening programs
  • working with professional surgical and community organisations to improve clinical practice and patient outcomes
