Postgraduate scholarships

Listed below are the details of University of Sydney and Sydney Medical School scholarships directly relevant to our research and coursework students in surgery. Please note that not all scholarships are offered in any one year.

John Brooke Moore Scholarship in Surgery (Coursework)

Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney offers up to two scholarships for suitably qualified candidates undertaking full-time study in the Master of Surgery (by coursework) at Sydney Medical School.

The scholarships were established from a bequest by Moira Brooke Moore to establish a postgraduate scholarship in surgery to the memory of her father Dr John Brooke Moore, who practised surgery for many years in Bathurst, NSW.

To be eligible candidates must be graduates of the University of Sydney, have been accepted into the Master of Surgery (by coursework) and be either Australian citizens or permanent residents, or citizens of New Zealand.

The scholarship is valued at $25,000 and is tenable for one year.

John Brooke Moore Research Scholarship in Surgery

This scholarship is offered by Sydney Medical School towards a full-time research degree for a suitably qualified candidate undertaking research into surgery.

The scholarship was established in 1979 from a bequest by Moira Brooke Moore to establish a postgraduate scholarship in surgery to the memory of her father Dr John Brooke Moore, who practised surgery for many years in Bathurst, NSW.

To be eligible candidates must be graduates of the University of Sydney, have been accepted into the Master of Surgery (by research) or the Doctor of Philosophy, and be either Australian citizens or permanent residents, or citizens of New Zealand. Applications will be judged on academic merit. Preference will be given to the applicant who can provide evidence of significant research potential as demonstrated by, for example, research publications.

The scholarship is valued at $40,000 and is tenable for one year in the first instance. The scholarship may be renewed for one year in the case of a master’s degree and up to two years for a Doctor of Philosophy. Other conditions are similar to the Australian Postgraduate Awards.

John Keith Chandler Scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2003 by a bequest from Bruce Veness Chandler in honour of his father, John Keith Chandler, in order to support study of any aspect of varicose veins and its associated problems, especially varicose ulcers and varicose eczema. Research to promote the healing of other external ulcers would fall within the ambit of this fund.

The scholarship shall be awarded on the basis of academic merit and appropriateness of the proposed program of research. The scholarship may only be awarded to an applicant who is admitted to candidature for a higher degree by research in Sydney Medical School and who enrols accordingly.

The scholarship shall be valued at the same rate as the Australian Postgraduate Award. A relocation allowance and a thesis allowance are payable in line with Australian Postgraduate Award entitlements.

John Loewenthal Scholarship

Established in 2008 by a gift from Professor John Wong to establish a postgraduate scholarship in surgery in memory of Professor Sir John Loewenthal.

To be eligible candidates must have been accepted into the Master of Surgery (by research or coursework), Master of Philosophy or the Doctor of Philosophy and be either Australian citizens or permanent residents, or citizens of New Zealand or Hong Kong.

The scholarship is valued at $20,000 and is tenable for one year in the first instance. The award shall be tenable for one year for Master of Surgery by coursework, up to two years in the case of a masters (by research) and up to three years for a Doctor of Philosophy.

Myee Codrington Scholarship in Microsurgery

The Myee Codrington Scholarship was established in 2006 to support research into the advancement of the use of microsurgery in clinical medicine.

The scholarship is valued at $35,000 per annum (tax exempt).

Nita and Norman Whiteley Scholarship

Established in 2008 by a bequest from Nita Winifred Whiteley to establish a postgraduate scholarship in surgery named for herself and her husband.

To be eligible, candidates must be undertaking research into the cause, treatment and cure of cancer, with priority given to upper gastro-intestinal tract malignancy, have been accepted into the Master of Surgery by research, a Master of Philosophy or a Doctor of Philosophy in the Discipline of Surgery and be either Australian citizens or permanent residents, or citizens of New Zealand.

The scholarship is valued at $30,000 and is tenable for one year.

Postgraduate Scholarship in Cancer Surgical Services Research

This scholarship is funded by a Cancer Institute NSW Health Services Research Program Grant for the CONNECT program and will provide support for 1 year for a student enrolled full-time in a Master of Surgery (coursework) who will undertake a research project relevant to the surgical care of cancer patients. Note that it is envisaged that the range of degrees will be broader in future.

Eligibility:

  • clinicians who wish to develop clinical research skills
  • must enrol full-time in the Master of Surgery (by coursework)
  • undertake a research project in an appropriate area
  • Australian or New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents

The scholarship is valued at $25,000 and is tenable for one year.

Vernon Barling Memorial Fellowship

Established in 1981 by colleagues of Eric Vernon Barling, MBE, MB BS, FRCS FRACS FACS, who died in a motor car accident in 1978 after having been for many years a clinical teacher in the Department of Surgery of the University.

The object of the Fellowship shall be to assist young surgeons in Australia who wish to undertake further clinical surgical training overseas prior to taking up hospital appointments in Australia. Preference will be given to those applicants without sufficient means to undertake clinical surgical training overseas. The Fellowship shall be tenable for one year only and will be awarded as funds are available.
